Italian accessible Caravaggio tours Cremona holiday excursion St Francis in Meditation is a canvas made by Caravaggio between 1605 and 1606.

The painting, which portrays a particularly intense moment of Franciscan hagiography, has a recent critical history since it was related to Caravaggio by the art historian Roberto Longhi in 1943 as likely to be a quality imitation, if not a good copy to an original.

In 1951, it was included in the catalog of the famous Royal Palace exhibition, and on that occasion, Danis Mahon claimed that it was an original dating to 1606, one of the first works of the painter's Neapolitan period.

Caravaggio in Cremona

Today, this work is preserved at the Civic Museum Pinacoteca of Cremona.

The assignment to Caravaggio hand, convinced more and more of the critics throughout the years, until the cleaning of 1986, highlighting the technical quality, canceled almost every attribution doubt.

The first news on the painting dates back to 1836 when the Marquis Filippo Ala Ponzone gave it to the Council of Cremona.
