Castelsardo Wheelchair Accessible Tours

One of the destinations not to be missed if you are on holiday in Northern Sardinia is certainly a nice visit to Castelsardo.

Castelsardo wheelchair accessible tours, is located on the coast overlooking the Gulf of Asinara about 40 kilometers North-East of Sassari and has everything you could wish for.

It is a cultural destination rich in tradition, you eat well ( especially fish ) and has wonderful beaches and coves in its vicinity.

In short, it does not displease anyone.

Included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Castelsardo is a small, intimate, authentic village, with a holiday and brackish air.

With wicker baskets resting on the stone stairs, flowers on the balconies, the tables of the restaurants along the alleys.

A village where getting lost does nothing but cheerfulness and lightheartedness, where even the souvenir shops seem genuine, where the gaze is truly lost on the horizon.

The history of the village of Castelsardo is inevitably linked to its position, which is beautiful but above all strategic.

Artifacts dating back to the Nuragic age have been found and it is certain that the ancient Romans also built houses here.

The historic center more or less as we know it today dates back to 1102.

It was founded by the Genoese Doria family who at the time reigned in these places and in the central part of the North Sardinian coast there are several testimonies.

At that time, as it should be, the village was called Castel Genovese.

The Dorias used it for a long time as a natural landing place and as a fortress to defend the trade routes that connected the island to Genoa.

Touring Castelsardo

Castelsardo would really be very different without the solid and imposing profile of the fortress that stands at the highest point of the village.

It is beautiful to look at from all points of view, but it is even more beautiful to enjoy it.

Walking on the old medieval walkway that surrounds the whole village like an embrace, and more particularly on the Bastioni di Manganella, where the beautiful green area of the Giardini of the Castle is located.

It is a great way to enjoy the sea air and truly magnificent views of the coast and the open sea.

The art of basketry is typical of Sardinia and several other areas of the Mediterranean.

The ancient tradition involves the intertwining of fibers and plant leaves for the creation of many different and everyday objects.

Not only them Paneri, the typical baskets of all shapes that you will find by the hundreds even in souvenir shops and around the village, but also Sieves, Baskets, Corbules, and even Su Fassoi, the typical cane boats that were used for lake fishing.

The museum is located right inside the castle, so you do two things together.

You discover more of this ancient and manual tradition and, in the meantime, you realize the spaces and history of the castle, the symbol of the village.

On the sea there is the beautiful Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate, particularly thanks to its bell tower colored by majolica and the Museum of the Maestro di Castelsardo.

While at the base of the Castle it is possible to visit the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where the wooden crucifix of the Black Christ is preserved.

Another symbol of Castelsardo is the elephant rock which is about four kilometers from the town, an unmistakable shape sculpted by the wind and which houses some domus de janas ( Nuragic Tombs ).
