Touring Ferrara

Present in the city since the XII century, the Jews have established an inextricable relationship with Ferrara.

The welcoming policy of the House of Este and, in particular of the dukes Ercole I and Ercole II, was crucial, the culmination of which are the edicts inviting Spanish and Portuguese Jews, expelled from their lands in 1492, to settle in the city .

The passage of the city to the State of the Church leads to the establishment of the ghetto in 1627 and to a contraction of the local community which will once again be the protagonist of the social and economic life of Ferrara after 1859, with the obtaining of equal rights.

The racial laws and the Nazi-fascist persecution have obscured the serenity of daily life, but the local community has been able to resist the impact of time and difficulties and after more than a thousand years it is still active.
