Metaponto Wheelchair Accessible Tours
Metaponto is a small district of the municipality of Bernalda, which has become a renowned seaside resort in the province of Matera.
In the past was one of the most flourishing towns of Magna Graecia.
Born on the plain to which it gave its name, this ancient center rises on the Ionian coast between two waterways, the Bradano to the east and the Basento to the west.
The ancient center of Metaponto was founded in the second half of the VII century BC by Greek colonists from Achaia, the region north of the Peloponnese.
Although other sources trace the foundation of the city to Nestor, the Greek hero who fought in Troy.
What is certain is that Metaponto soon became a rich and flourishing city, also thanks to the fertile soil that made the crops abundant.
Traces of a glorious past made up of heroes and divinities, warriors and philosophers, such as the mathematician Pythagoras, who founded his school in Metaponto and died here in 495 BC. are imprinted in the archeology area and in the museum.
Symbol of the ancient Greek city are the imposing and fascinating Palatine Tables, twelve columns in Doric style, the remains of the Temple of Hera.
The history of the city of Metaponto is long and involves fascinating historical figures such as Hannibal, the great Carthaginian leader, and Spartacus, the gladiator who led the slave revolt in the third servile war faced by Rome.
But the best way to get to know and deepen the rich past of the region is certainly to visit the Archaeological Area of Metaponto, located a few kilometers from the town, and the National Archaeological Museum in the center of the hamlet.

Touring Metaponto
The Apollo Licio Archaeological Park is the site where the heart of the city of Metaponto was present, with its avenues, sanctums and theater.
It is located north of Metaponto village, it includes the urban sanctuary, part of the Agora, the handicraft district for the production of ceramics ( kerameikos ) and the great north-south road axis ( Plateia ) on which the entire urban plant is located.
Overall, the traces of a considerable amount of monuments that have marked the civil and religious life of the colony are recognizable, from the initial stages of its foundation to the Roman conquest in the III century BC.
Unfortunately the structures are not conspicuously preserved.
Very often only the first rows or the negative traces of the foundations are observed.
This is attributable to the continuous looting suffered by the Greek city due to the absence of valid building material in the area.
The large squared blocks of limestone have been reused continuously and in all historical periods.
The medieval complex of Torre di Mare itself, near the railway yard, as well as the historic centers of the first neighboring villages such as Bernalda, Montescaglioso and Pisticci, were built with stone materials from several Pontine buildings.
