Oropa Sanctuary Wheelchair Accessible Tours

The Oropa Santuary wheelchair accessible tours, is located at 1180 meters above sea level and among the most famous sacred places in Piedmont: every year 800,000 pilgrims flock there.

The reason? Experience the spirituality of the place and admire the natural beauty of the area.

Oropa, near Biella, allows you to admire a unique heritage of sacred art and culture, such as the XVIII century staircase of the Porta Regia by Filippo Juvarra and the collection of jewels and sacred furnishings.

However, those who choose this destination also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a natural park which includes a valley surrounded by high peaks from whose peaks you can enjoy a breathtaking view.

For these reasons, the ecclesiastical complex has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site, while the entire naturalistic area is a Special Nature Reserve of the Sacro Monte of Oropa.

Touring Oropa Sanctuary

Visiting the Oropa Santuary means discovering one of the most important places dedicated to Marian worship in the West.

Legend has it that St Eusebius, Bishop of Vercelli, took refuge in these mountains to escape persecution in the IV century AD.

And with him, for protection, he would have brought a wooden statue of the Black Madonna, presumed to be the work of St Luke the Evangelist, which he found in Jerusalem.

The statue of the Holy Virgin of Oropa is the symbol of the sanctuary: today kept in a chapel decorated with XIV century frescoes in the ancient Basilica.

The first historical documentary information on the place of worship dates back to the XIII century, the period to which the original nucleus of the sanctuary dates back, then progressively enriched over the centuries.

During the plague of 1599, by vote, the city of Biella built a new church in place of the small XIII century church.
