St Paul Out Of The Walls conveys to us in a clear and precise way the spirit and mission of the Apostle.
He dedicated his entire life to the evangelization of the world until his death.
The large statue located in the vast courtyard that precedes the Basilica carries in his hands the Gospel and a Sword.
They are the powerful signs of his evangelizing mission and of the efficacy of the Word of God in the hearts of men.
Entering the Basilica, its breadth and solemnity reminds us of the universal dimension of the mission of the Gospel to be brought to the whole world and to all peoples.
At the center of the transept above the papal altar, so called, because only the pontiff or a person delegated by him can celebrate there, the beautiful Ciborium rises.
It represents one of the most beautiful sculptural works of art of Christian Rome, created by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1285.
The Ciborium, damaged by the fire, was rebuilt on XIX century columns, with some additions.
The body of the Apostle is today found under the altar of the Confession.
A white marble balustrade, erected during the Jubilee of 1575, surrounds the altar, and supports 28 bronze lamps.
